As a kid, our mom sewed lots of our clothes. But we wanted Esprit, and Mom was pushing Peter Pan collars and calico. Fast forward to today: we love shopping … and hate sewing.
Cloth and Canvas brings together people who love to sew and those of us who love to shop. Everything in this sweet space is made in Portland, many items by proprietress Julia in the shop’s open workroom. Julia’s label, GaRey, features to-die-for winter coats that are totally custom. Choose the color, lining, even buttons, and Julia will craft a dream coat that fits you perfectly. GaRey’s separates (we especially love the V-neck T’s in soft bamboo) share space with figure-friendly frocks from Rosabode and cute panties by Halves, and look for work-wear options from Portland designer Lizz Baysinger coming soon. Locally made jewelry, statement-making scarves, darling handbags, and a rotating exhibit of art round out the loveliness.
With so many talented designers around, we count ourselves lucky to be on the shopping side of things, but secretly wish that our mom still sewed for us now and then…
