We love an Old Fashioned. It’s simple, it’s tasty, and when sipped slowly it can keep you tipsy at roughly half the drinking rate of a vodka tonic. Plus it’s sexy when a lady orders one. Our new favorite Old Fashioned spirit of choice is Temperance Trader from Portland’s own Bull Run Distilling Co. It’s a nice blend of spicy rye and a sweeter, smooth whiskey that elevates any cocktail—or rocks—to a thing of beauty.

Ransom Spirits’ Whippersnapper Whiskey
We’ve been visiting parlors and watching Ken Burns’ “Prohibition” on OPB, and now we can’t stop thinking about whiskey. So we hightailed it to the store and came home with an olde-timey looking bottle of very modern Whippersnapper Whiskey, produced by hand in Sheridan, Oregon, from Ransom Spirits. We sipped it on the rocks (the nose is caramel, and finishes with a subtle spice), but next time it’s happening with ginger beer!
Seven Seas Breeze
We’ve had enough beer (and enough of our beer-belly) already, and summer has just begun. So we were on the hunt for a new libation to sip in the sun when we came across this deliciousness: the Seven Seas Breeze. We propose making gallons of it for barbecues!
Seven Seas Breeze
1 part Sailor Jerry Rum
1 part grapefruit
1 part cranberry juice
Serve in a highball or rocks glass over ice. Garnish with a lime wedge, and enjoy!
Pendleton Mint Juleps
If there’s one sporting event we can get behind, it’s the Kentucky Derby. A day where you can wear ginormous hats and frilly dresses and men come correct in seersucker suits? We’re so there. So we must drink “the” drink of the Derby—a Mint Julep—with the northwest’s own Pendleton Whisky. Annnnd they’re off!
Lavishmint Mojito
Mojitos have had their day, you say? Just wait until you’ve made one with Northwest Distillery’s Lavishmint Vodka—no muddling required! With a touch of spearmint and peppermint from northwest farms and crisp vodka based with pure Oregon water, Lavishmint is the ultimate Mojito-maker. (Though we also enjoy it “straight up.”) It’s a new twist on a favorite summer drink!
The Lavishmint Mojito:
2 oz. Lavishmint Vodka
1 oz. Lime
1 oz. Simple Syrup
2 oz. Soda
1 Sprig of Mint
Mix and serve over ice, garnish with mint, and take a moment to be thankful that someone invented mint vodka, because it’s genius.
Avion Tequila
Shake off the Uncle Sam blues with something pink, fruity, and potent. Today is tax day, and you need a margarita… or a Strawberry Fizz. (Which we are completely obsessed with, btw.) And Avion Tequila—new to Oregon—is the must-have cocktail ingredient for spring.
Avion Strawberry Fizz:
2 Sweet strawberries
¾ oz. Fresh lemon juice
1 oz. Agave nectar
2 oz. Tequila Avión
2 oz. Dry Champagne
Muddle strawberries in a shaker; add the remaining ingredients (except Champagne) in the shaker. Shake vigorously and then finely strain into a Champagne flute. Float 2 oz. dry Champagne on top and garnish with strawberry slice.
901 Tequila
Did you know…? Tuesday is National Margarita Day! Best… holiday… ever. And to celebrate, we’ve got a delicious recipe, courtesy of 901 Tequila (which was created by Justin Timberlake, btw), to take your marg-making status from ordinary to legendary.
The Millington:
1 3/4 oz 901 Silver Tequila
1 oz or orange marmalade
1/2 oz Cointreau
1/2 oz Fresh Orange Juice
3/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice
Rim a rocks glass with salt. Pour all the ingredients into a shaker. Add ice, shake and pour. Garnish with a lemon wheel.
Cocktail of the Week
Need a great hostess gift, or a way to add glamour to a New Year’s Eve party? We totally fell for this bottle of Absolut Glimmer—um, hello—it’s world-favorite Absolut vodka in a limited-edition bottle that’s cut like crystal, and you know how we love sparkly things. Glimmer is the sexiest thing we’ve seen on a bar since… well… there was a bachelorette party… but with this, you won’t hate yourself in the morning.
