Here’s a curiosity we’ve pondered: Of all the decades to recycle fashion from, why are the coolest ones always overlooked? The ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s rocked! Sartorially, there was sophistication (Sophia Loren), glam (Greta Garbo), romance (Cary Grant), and a hint of naughty (prohibition speakeasy) all rolled into one. Oh, and hats! Can we bring back the everyday hat? Please?
Hats do more than just keep our heads warm—they personalize our style, accessorize our look, and make a statement. (Yes, one hat can do all that!) And now, Flipside hats—those adorable, quirky, fun, and sometimes reversible hats found at boutiques, New Seasons, and Whole Foods throughout Portland—will finally get the spotlight they deserve. On Monday, Flipside Hats opens their own storefront location on SE Belmont. Rich colors, amazing materials, and funky designs (for women, men, and even little ones) beckon us to try them on. Just one question: Do we have to choose just one?
That’s it, we’ve decided—hats rule and just one...
We have a love/hate relationship with getting older. We love the “and wiser” part, but on those odd occasions when the lighting is bad or we’re catching ourselves in the mirror looking up at something and we see a person who looks 25 years older, then we’re not so into it.
And as we’ve gotten older, we’ve had longer and longer discussions with our friends about what to do (Botox? Juvederm? Laser treatments?), when to do it (if at all), and who to get it from. Which is how we found out about Elizabeth Gallagher’s Fresh Faces business. She is literally all over town so her offices are conveniently located, and she offers personalized service, from answering her phone calls to doing in-home sessions. So under her care we tried Juvederm—and it was amazing. The “parentheses” disappeared and our visage appeared 10 years younger. Instant happiness.
Now for the important info: She’s Board Certified on a national level as a Nurse Practitioner and specializes in Medical Aesthetics. She’s also an international educator. Bottom line? You’ll look fantastic....
We’ve been known to while away the hours ogling street-style blogs from New York, Milan, and Paris. Even with all of this inspiration, our personal street style leans more “grocery shopper” than “girl about town” these days.
Leanna NYC is just the place for us to get back in the street-style game. We love their cool, laid-back separates mixed with sleek ready-to-wear: the perfect Portland/New York mash-up. A great pair of jeans leads to zillions of great outfits and Leanna NYC has styles a-plenty from James Jeans and Fidelity Denim: cords, dark-wash, flare, boot cut, skinny … there’s a fit for every body type. Cold weather has us hankering for coats, and we spotted oodles from Tulle and a darling ruffled trench by Saga. We swooned over more than a few sweater dresses, truly cool eco-friendly bags by Jesslyn Blake, and super stylish separates from Gentle Fawn. Owner Leanna knows that Portland loves local and stocks her shop with gorgeous jewels by Natalie Joy, Fresh Tangerine, and Deluxe Delovely.
With a few additions...
How cute is this bowl? It reminds us of the one that Grandma had on the coffee table. As kids, we’d run into her house and make a grab for the candies that always filled it. Though she was diabetic and they were sugarless, we ate them anyway because candy is candy!
In any case, this lovely gramma-lookalike bowl is just $7.99 at IKEA, and yes, we’re pimping a bowl from the big-box Swede, but look at it. I know, right?
We can’t imagine the restraint it must take to keep a refrigerator magnet-free. It’s so tempting to put up a straight-A report card, a cute photo, or an appointment reminder. So if you’re going to stick things on your fridge, you may as well have a sense of humor about it.
We fell hard for these “Animal Butt Magnets” by Steph Mantis. Heads are so overrated—it’s all about the bedonkadonk, especially when it’s an exotic bedonkadonk.

We have a minor obsession with leather-wrap bracelets, probably traceable back to 1984 and Madonna’s Like a Virgin video… we didn’t go for the lingerie-as-daywear, but OMG did we love her jewelry!
So coming across these colorful leather wrap bracelets online was like a gift from rock-n-roll heaven. We love the dark green, but there are other colors, too, so you can get sassy and mix them up… so Material Girl!
