We’re finished with our tomboy phase. Now that we’re older, we are all about the girly-ness: bachelorette parties, shoe shopping, girls’ nights out … sign us up.
One step in to Xtabay Vintage Bridal Salon and we’ve officially entered girl nirvana. Owner Liz Gross has created a sumptuous, dream-like atelier for the bride-to-be: a palatial dressing room, beautiful lighting, and enough room for a whole gaggle of bridesmaids to help celebrate. Like Xtabay—the Bridal Salon’s exquisite big sister—the racks are filled with pristine vintage goodies. Gorgeous bridal gowns line the walls: frothy confections of organza and silk, elegant columns cut on the bias, and mod-cut sheaths—there’s a dress for every style of bride here. Xtabay Bridal is open by appointment only, and brides and their friends are treated to bubbly, cookies, and an altogether divine day of dress shopping. Expert in-house alterations are, of course, available, and a bevy of darling shoes, jewels and even vintage cake-toppers round out the gorgeous offerings.
Some days we still have a touch of tomboy left, and he thinks we should have a more generous shoe budget.

Portland’s eastside is a bastion of cool. Lately though, the rock ‘n roll lifestyle has been steadily stabbing westward. We downtowners may find ourselves a part of the bridge-and- … well … bridge crowd less often, as some first-rate boho haunts find second homes in our ’hood.
Exactly one year after opening their E. Burnside pie hole, Sizzle Pie, the punky purveyors who brought east-coast pizza to us Westies, are ready to localize that migratory pattern. Where better to land than the slice-shaped space across the street from Powell’s Books (filling the hole in our hearts and stomachs left by Rocco’s Pizza) where one can read, think and eat independently in a single block? No longer must we trek across a bridge to satiate our gluten- and meat-free besties—we indulge in the steaky goodness of “It’s Always Sunny in Portland” while they happily nosh on the pepper-laden genius of the “The Francesca.”
Sizzle Pie is open crazy late—like, later than you’ve been up since college—and the Grand Opening Party starts New Year’s Eve at 6 pm. Be there.

It’s getting tougher to choose a “new favorite haunt” in the neighborhood lately. Isn’t that a wonderful thing?
The latest player is The Box Social, with a “secret spot vibe” that’s kind of like a speakeasy in reverse—huge windows put everyone on display, but it still feels intimate inside. The bar’s owner, Shannon McQuilkin, is also co-owner of the Sapphire Hotel, so she knows how to set a scene—even, literally, in a box on the corner of busy Williams Avenue. There’s an enormous night-time mural of downtown Portland, the entire space is awash in cozy candlelight, and running the length of a windowed wall is a plush bench that begs for some louche lounging with a creative house cocktail. If you’re lucky, you’ll be there when Margaux is behind the bar. Ask her to create a champagne cocktail for you—tell her what you like and she’ll work her magic.
Speaking of magic, they’ll be ringing in the New Year with a DJ and a champagne toast, and there’s no cover, which seems delightfully sociable of them. Margaux, get ready!

We don’t do New Year’s in our jammies—even if we’re just spending it at home with the Pugs and a bottle of Veuve. Nope. We get dressed up. Heels, LBD, tons of mascara and a slammin’ pair of glamorous, sparkling earrings.
We may have found the perfect pair from grayling—they’re dangly, shiny and over-the-top, and will look right at home with the LBD… or a pair of jeans and a t-shirt. Happy New Year!

Let’s toast to the beginning of a new year—and all the hopes and dreams we’ll pin to it. Let’s toast to good friends, good times, and a kiss at midnight. And let’s toast to these absolutely perfect platinum-etched champagne glasses.
Even if you’re drinking $3.79 Andre from the drugstore, your sparkling wine of choice will look—and even taste—better in these fabulous flutes. Find them at the brand new Red Sail shop on Alberta!

We love glitter. We love shoes. Glitter… shoes… glittershoes! In order to be the belle of the ball you have to make an entrance, and in these there’s no way you can walk in unnoticed. Ferreals.
Best part? These unspeakably fun “Tinkerbell” shoes by Shelly (available at Imelda’s) will not only feel great after a long night of dancing, but they’ll keep you looking fabulous (from the ankles down) long after the ball drops.
